Awarded a $25,000 Grant from Advance SC.
Dean
Kamen back in news. Click here for details.
The Awards and Recognition
Banquet, held last Thursday was a big success. A scrumptious meal was
served and everyone had a great time. Speeches, handshakes, and smiling
faces were the order of the evening.
After the meal, Lego League
teams
were recognized by their mentors. Mr. Robert Sloan thanked all the
parents and mentors of his Seneca Middle School based teams. "I am so
thankful for all of you." he said. Mrs. Lola Whitworth, from West-Oak
Middle School highlighted her teams accomplishments with a power point
presentation and motivational speech. She recognized her students with
framed certificates, and also acknowledged the importance of her
mentors in its success.
Mr. Steven Watterson then
recognized the MiM team members, along with Mr. Gene Falendysz. Each
qualifying student was awarded either a block letter or an experience
bar. Falendysz then spoke to the crowd about how excited he
was to see such a high degree of enthusiasm from our students this
year. "This has truly been one of our greatest groups of students." he
said.
Later, Watterson announced
to the
group that a grant he wrote last fall was approved by the Advance South
Carolina organization. The team has been awarded $25,000 for the
purpose of Metal In Motion regional and championship registrations;
robot building materials; and items strictly related to the MiM
organization. He will be responsible for keeping track of the grant
funding and it is possible to have it renewed in the future. "We are
extremely excited to have this funding and support." said Hamilton
Career Center Director, Mike Pearson. "This will provide the team with
some additional opportunities without the stress of having to do
supplemental fund raising. We are truly blessed with this grant."
Team engineer and mentor,
Mr. Gene
Falendysz later addressed the group on the importance of being involved
with the Lego, Vex and FIRST teams. He told the crowd of about 100
people how our country needs more engineers. "Use these teams as a
stepping stone to better understand what engineering is all about. We
need you!" he said.
Falendysz then announced
that he
and Steven Watterson had made arrangements to have one of our MiM
robots shipped to New Zealand to help promote the FIRST program there.
"We are unsure as to exactly which machine is going, but MiM and Team
343 will become well known "Down Under." he said. Rumor has it that
Cyclone will be making the trip after some cleaning and servicing.
As the summer break
approaches,
eager anticipation will abound in the fall about the 2008-09 game and
our team. Returning students and mentors should monitor the web page
and look for announcements related to future meetings. Hopefully we
will have many new members who can add value to the team. Thanks to
everyone who helped make this year such a success.

Team members who attended
the
banquet include: (l-r) Seth, Casey, Brandy, Tori, and Randall. Middle
Row: Curtis, Seph, Jordan, Nick "da Cat", Danny, and Jonathan. Back
Row: Brent, Will, Christopher (Ziggy), Ethan, Zack and Eric.
